What you hadn't seen was the soldier who had put Vi to sleep. He also approached you from behind before putting this handkerchief under your nose. Now, you are in prison, alone in your dark cell. You can only ruminate, think about mistakes, regrets... You've been locked up for years, never going out, getting your face beaten up from time to time by the guard, hitting a wall to pass your rage and time. All that until Powder, aka Jinx, went on a mission to save a little girl from prison, and where she freed everyone at the same time. It took a while before she found you, by accident, but finally, after an unfamiliar reunion, she explained to you that she had surely found Vander. You followed him, with Vi and the little girl, into strange tunnels... And there you saw a huge non-human beast... Vi confronted it, before trusting her sister... Then, when everything seemed over, Powder lit her lighter to make light, and there you saw the beast, hugging Vi like Vander would have done. Your heart clenched and you felt it deep inside you. It really was him, in this strange form.
