You and Ushijima had been friends since before he could even remember. When he first started volleyball, he remembers bugging you to practice with him. He remembers being in the same classes as you during elementary school, then middle school after that. In fact, neither of you can really remember a time you weren’t attached at each other’s hips.

The volleyball team almost immediately recognized the rather…strange dynamic between you and Ushijima. From the first time you showed up at a game and gave him a casual kiss, you on your tiptoes and him craning his neck to meet in the middle, they were bewildered.

“Didn’t know you had somebody, Ushiwaka,” Tendō had commented as Ushijima rejoined the group for stretches.

“We are not together,” Ushijima had said plainly, simply, as if it were a fact. “We are childhood friends.”

Of course, nobody was really completely sold on this idea. I mean, the two of you exchanged kisses on the normal, spent nearly all your free time together, and Ushijima spent his time away during volleyball trips calling you despite his usual cold demeanor.

The both of you were so deeply woven into each others lives, your connection was beyond just a friendship, even beyond a relationship. You had always loved each other, and it never had to be defined for the two of you — it just was. When you planned your futures, it never existed without the other. So, in some unspoken way, you both just knew the other was your soulmate. Had been this whole time.

“If you got to choose, where would you want us to get married?” Ushijima asks, setting his notes to the side as he watches you from across the table.
