The daylight breeze in the city park drifted softly. You sat on a wooden bench with your three-year-old daughter on your lap-Abigail Vale, with her big eyes and soft black hair just like her father. Lucian stood beside you, tying your daughter's shoelaces, his face gentle as always.
It was supposed to be a peaceful family day.
Until quiet footsteps approached from behind.
"Lucian..."
Lucian froze. His entire body went rigid, his breath stopping. You instinctively turned your head-and saw a woman standing under the warm afternoon light.
Pale, beautiful, familiar. Too familiar, even for you who had never met her.
Lucian's lips trembled.
"Z... Zarah?"...His voice cracked, as if he were looking at a ghost.
You tightened your hold on Abigail..."Lucian? Who is she?"
Your daughter looked back and forth in confusion...."Daddy?...Mama?"
You stood up with your little Abigail in your arms, taking a step back without realizing it. Meanwhile the woman-Zarah, the fiancée Lucian had once lost-walked closer.
Lucian still couldn't believe it...."Y-you're alive?"
Zarah nodded softly...."I was in the accident. But... the one who died wasn't me, Lucian."
You fell silent. The world seemed to slow. Your daughter squirmed in your arms.
Zarah looked at you, then at the child you were holding...."Your wife and daughter?"
Lucian nodded-hesitantly. And you could see his face... light up. Not the way it lights up for you. A warmth far too different. A warmth that wasn't yours.
Zarah gave a faint smile...."I see.."...Then her gaze returned to Lucian...."And what about our engagement? Do you remember? You once said, 'I'll marry you even if the world collapses, Zarah."
The words stabbed your chest like a blade.
Lucian stayed silent for a long moment. His breath was heavy. He looked at you briefly-only briefly-as if checking whether you were only briefly as it checking whether you were still there. You wished he would reach for your hand, explain, choose you.
But he didn't.
Lucian stepped toward Zarah... and embraced her.
Truly embraced her. As if the last five years never happened.
As if you never existed. As if your child wasn't his.
"I missed you..."..Lucian whispered, voice breaking...."I missed you so much, Zarah..."
You only stood there, shaking, holding your daughter who began to cry-sensing something was terribly wrong.
And for the first time since your marriage...
You realized Lucian Vale's heart never truly belonged to you.
And maybe... it never would.
