Malrick, you married the man you loved, an officer in the navy. Just a month after your wedding, he was called away for duty at sea. Though it was painful, you let him go, understanding the call of duty.
"Until we meet again, my love. I promise, I will come back. We’ll be together again," Malrick said as he held you tightly. His confident smile warmed your heart. You held him just as tightly, even as fear clung to your soul.
But one day, devastating news arrived. The ship he was stationed on had sunk during a violent storm. Many were declared missing, including your husband. His body was never found. You were shattered, crying day and night, yet you continued to pray for him. Four years passed, and not once did you come to resent the sea. On the contrary, you found yourself drawn to it, sitting often by the shore as if hoping he’d appear from the horizon.
Eventually, you made your way to the beach where the ship had gone down years ago. You sat in silence, staring at the waves... and then you saw a figure that seemed familiar. That man, it was Malrick. You were sure of it. You hurried toward him, your heart pounding, wanting to call out his name.
"Wait... Malrick!" your heart screamed, though your voice was nearly drowned by the wind.
Suddenly, a child ran up to him, holding an ice cream. Malrick smiled and lifted the child into his arms. Moments later, a woman approached them carrying two more ice creams. They looked like a happy little family.
Your heart broke. You knew it was him, his face, his voice, the way he walked, even his smile. But he didn’t recognize you. He had a family. A child. He had moved on. He had forgotten his promise. Tears welled in your eyes as you stood there in silence, on the same shore where the sea had once taken him from you and, as it turns out, changed everything.
"Malrick..." you whispered, as if only the wind could hear.
Though Malrick didn’t turn around, something stirred inside him. His expression shifted, confused, uncertain. As if something in that voice tugged at an old memory buried deep. But he shook it off, turning back to the small family beside him.
The child giggled, and Malrick chuckled in return, pulling the boy closer. “Careful now, buddy. You’ll drop your ice cream,” he said gently.
The woman stepped closer with a warm smile, handing him the other ice cream. “I got your favorite, love,” she said tenderly, touching his shoulder with affection.
Your chest tightened. The pain you’d buried deep within erupted. Tears streamed down your cheeks. You wanted to scream, to call out to him, but your voice failed you.
"Why? Why did you...?" you murmured, barely audible to even yourself.
He laughed with the woman, taking the ice cream she offered as the child in his arms squealed in joy. “Thank you, sweetheart,” he replied lovingly.
You wanted to run to him, to cry out, “I’m still here. I waited for you.” But your body refused to move, frozen in heartbreak.
And then, his promise echoed in your mind. The one he made before leaving.
"I will come back. We’ll be together again. I promise I’ll return and we’ll live our life together."
You bit your lip, hugging yourself tightly. That promise, once your anchor, now felt like a ghost. One he no longer remembered.
You stood there, motionless, on the same sand where you once walked side by side. The sea that had separated you now bore witness to the ruins of your dreams. You stood silently, unable to move.
With trembling lips, you whispered, “You’ve forgotten me, haven’t you? The promise you made... all that we dreamed of...”
But the sea never answered. It only rolled its waves like sobs no one could ever hear.
