The sun rose slow and soft over the zoo, washing the pathways, ponds, and thick green trees in a pale gold warmth. The air was crisp, still cool from the night, and the faint mist drifting above the shallow flamingo pools caught the light like glass dust. Beyond the guest paths and the murmuring water, the barred habitats stretched in an organized sprawl—each one built for its own category of animals. Big cats in one broad enclosure with stones warmed by heat lamps… feathered creatures in lofty, branch-stacked aviaries… scaled creatures under warm UV lights… sea animals in deep, flowing tanks.

And then there was the habitat where {{user}} lived—spacious, layered with shade, packed with their own species who milled around in the early morning quiet. Some lounged. Some chattered sleepily. Some yawned wide, stretching out like they had all the time in the world. {{user}} stirred, shifting just enough for the hay beneath them to rustle.

Today was cleaning day. Which meant: washing, brushing, and most importantly… a long, glorious free day in the huge field behind the zoo. A place where the animals could roam together, separated only by instinct and common sense—no visitors, no fences, just space, grass, and enough food that even the most territorial creatures tolerated neighbors.

Metal scraped against the outer gate. The keepers were here.

Leon entered first—tall, relaxed, familiar, the kind of human who walked like he’d been raised by the animals he cared for. Every creature in the zoo respected him. Even the different types of big cats blinked at him softly like he was one of their own. The hyenas greeted him with low, friendly whoops. And the aviary? They practically sang when he passed.

Today, he carried a heavy bucket. A mix of meat and lettuce, tossed together in the way the species in this enclosure preferred—some picked at the greens, others tore into the meat. The smell wafted across the habitat, and a few of {{user}}’s companions perked up immediately.

Behind Leon came the new guy.

    Norbert.

Young. Nervous. Shoulders tucked like he expected a creature to leap out and grab him at any moment. His nametag flashed in the cool light as he hovered in the doorway, gripping a smaller bucket like it might protect him from danger. His boots squeaked. His breathing was a little too loud.

One of {{user}}’s species nudged another. “Fresh meat,” they snickered under their breath. The whole group had noticed him already.

Leon strode confidently toward the large stone dish at the center of the habitat, dumping the food in with practiced ease. “Morning, everyone,” he said warmly—his voice easy, but to the animals, it translated only as the familiar tone of a trusted human. They understood the meaning through his posture and energy more than his words.

Norbert edged in behind him. He flinched when one of the older animals let out a low greeting grunt. Another chuckled, “Look at him. He thinks we eat newbies.”

A third stretched lazily. “The hyenas are going to have a field day.”

{{user}} shifted again, watching quietly as Leo gave a final pat to the side of the feeding bowl, then motioned to Norbert.

“Go on,” Leon instructed. “Say hello. They won’t hurt you.”

    Norbert swallowed hard.

He stepped forward. One of {{user}}’s companions deliberately shuffled closer, looming just enough to make the newbie freeze in terror. The group snickered among themselves. “Should we snarl?” “Nah, he’ll faint.” “Maybe just stare.”

“See?” he nudged Norbert. “They like you. Worst they’ll do is judge how you’re carrying the bucket.”

The animals all turned at once, staring at the wobbling bucket in Norbert’s hands.

    He squeaked.

Leon sighed. “Alright. Let’s move on before you drop that.”

As the keepers left, moving on to get the other animals. The gate clanked shut behind them. The enclosure eased back into its usual morning rhythm—stretching, murmuring, playful shoves between companions, and the soft crunch of breakfast.
