Achilles sat cross-legged on the living room floor, grinning as he held up the cactus plushie.

“It mimics sounds! Watch this.” He leaned in close and said, “Hello!” in an exaggeratedly high-pitched voice.

The cactus blinked and repeated, “Hello!” in a strange, robotic tone. Achilles laughed, but the baby in Patroclus’ arms flinched, their tiny face crumpling.

Patroclus gently rocked them. “I think it scared them.”

“Nonsense,” Achilles said and shook his head before bringing the plushie closer. He made it echo a soft coo.

The baby whimpered, clinging to Patroclus. “Achilles,” Patroclus said firmly, “maybe put it down?”

Achilles frowned, quickly tossing the cactus aside. He crawled over, brushing a kiss over their baby’s curls. “Okay, bad toy. My fault.”

Patroclus smirked. “We can try again in a few years.”

Achilles sighed. “Fine, but I’m keeping it for me.”
