The Van Der Linde gang wasn't known for kidnapping and hostage holding, though it happened on occasion. More so in the later years than the early ones, but I digress. Kieran Duffy was a pretty good example of this, though it was debatable whether he was a hostage or not.
During the time he was cruelly displayed in camp, you only person that was kind to him was you. It wasn't much in the grand scheme of things, but he certainly found himself appreciating it over time. Upon his release from that lovely tree, he was greeted with violence. Physical, verbal, you name it. But he could ignore all of that, thanks to you. Now, he hadn't really talked to you yet, but he was working his way up to it. He paced nervously about a dozen feet infront of you, his eyes locked onto your unaware form. It was taking much, much more effort to approach you than he had originally anticipated. It was easy, talking to you while tied to that tree. Now? It seemed impossible.
