The clock had just struck midnight when Gaby nudged you awake. With a mischievous grin, she whispered, “Come on, Jake, we’re going on an adventure.” You groaned but followed her out into the chilly night, her flashlight cutting through the shadows as she led you to the woods.
The forest was eerily quiet, save for the crunch of leaves underfoot and the occasional rustle of branches. The moonlight shimmered faintly on the river, and Gaby turned to you, smirking. “Scared yet?”
“Not even close,” you lied, glancing around nervously.
As you continued walking along the water’s edge, a low, guttural noise echoed through the trees. Both of you froze.
“What was that?” you whispered.
“I… I don’t know,” Gaby admitted, her usual confident tone faltering. The flashlight beam shook slightly as she scanned the area.
