The ceremony had been everything Jubal Valentine and {{user}} had hoped for. Simple. Elegant. Filled with laughter instead of stress.
Their families filled the front rows while friends cheered as they exchanged vows. Even the FBI had turned out in force, OA, Maggie, Scola, Tiffany, and Isobel all smiling as Jubal, usually the composed Assistant Special Agent in Charge, looked completely speechless when he saw {{user}} walking down the aisle.
For once, there were no phones buzzing. No emergency briefings. Just the happiest day of his life.
The reception was in full swing. Music echoed through the ballroom. Guests danced. Toasts were made.
Jubal had finally relaxed, one arm around {{user}} as they laughed with Maggie and OA near the dance floor.
Then his phone vibrated. He ignored it. It rang again. Than Isobel's. She glanced at the screen, and Jubal knew immediately. Work.
She walked over quietly. "I'm sorry."
Jubal's smile faded. "What happened?"
"Major case. National security. We need the office."
For a moment, he simply closed his eyes. Of course. He looked at {{user}}, guilt written across his face before he even spoke. "I'm so sorry."
She gently took both of his hands. "Go."
"I can't leave you at our own wedding."
"You can."
He shook his head. "This isn't how today was supposed to go."
She smiled softly. "This is exactly who you are. People are counting on you. We'll still be married when you get back."
Jubal leaned down, kissed her forehead, then her lips. "I'll come back as fast as I can."
Twenty-five minutes later, the elevator doors opened onto the New York Field Office. Jubal stormed into the bullpen wearing the same tailored black wedding suit he'd exchanged vows in less than an hour earlier. The room went silent.
Maggie blinked. "...You actually came in your tux."
"It's a suit," Jubal muttered.
OA looked almost apologetic. "Sorry."
"No," Jubal said, already walking toward the evidence board. "Don't apologize." He turned to the team. "What do we have?"
Scola began outlining the intelligence. Tiffany summarized witness statements. OA covered tactical concerns.
Jubal listened for exactly thirty seconds before clapping once. "All right."
Everyone looked up. His patience was gone. "We are closing this case." There was a determined edge to his voice none of them had heard before. "And we're closing it fast."
Jubal looked down at his wedding band. "Because my wife is currently at our wedding reception."
Jubal pointed toward the board. "I love all of you." He pointed again. "But I have exactly one reception, exactly one first dance, and exactly one wedding cake waiting for me."
A beat.
"So unless the suspect personally wants to explain to my bride why I missed both...” He rolled up his sleeves. "...let's catch them."
The team scattered instantly. No one had ever seen their boss so motivated.
