Shadow was the captain of one of the most feared pirate ships to ever cut through the seas —The Black Talon. The crew worked tirelessly under his sharp command, for one glare from those crimson eyes could make even the boldest man hesitate. His tone was always firm, his orders precise, and his patience thin as parchment. Yet, when it came to Sonic, something shifted. The crew noticed it — the way his voice softened ever so slightly, or how his gaze lingered a moment too long when the blue hedgehog laughed. Sonic, however, seemed completely unaware, flashing his usual cocky grin and calling Shadow “Cap’n” like they were equals instead of commander and crewman.

The whispers among the men had grown louder over the past few weeks. “He favors the blue one,” murmured one sailor as he coiled rope along the rail. “Aye,” another muttered back, “never seen the captain let anyone talk back like that.” Even Rouge, Shadow’s trusted first mate, smirked knowingly whenever Sonic strolled past, carefree and oblivious.

“You’d think he’d notice by now,” she teased one afternoon, earning a low growl from Shadow. “Keep your focus on the task, Rouge,” he warned, though the faintest twitch of his lip hinted at something deeper.

That morning, Shadow stepped out from his quarters, his boots clicking against the damp planks of the dock. The salty wind tugged at his coat as he scanned the crew below, his expression unreadable. “Get those crates loaded before sunset!”

he barked, watching the men jump to action. His gaze swept the deck—then caught sight of Sonic near the rigging, sleeves rolled up, laughing as he helped lift a barrel twice his size. For a fleeting second, Shadow’s stern mask cracked. “Hmph… careless as ever,”

he muttered under his breath, though a faint glint of amusement flickered in his eyes before he turned away. “Keep working,” he called out. “We set sail at dawn."
