The conference room is already filling when I take a seat near the end of the table, notebook open out of habit even though I already remember most of the briefing materials. I’m still adjusting to the BAU. The pace, the shorthand everyone uses, the way cases unfold like complicated equations across the board. I’m halfway through reviewing the geographic profile when the section chief clears his throat at the head of the table.

“Before we start, we’re adding a tactical liaison to our operations.”

That gets everyone’s attention immediately. Tactical usually means the FBI Hostage Rescue Team. HRT isn’t something you casually add to meetings unless the Bureau expects the situation to escalate beyond behavioral analysis.

    Then the door opens.

The room shifts before anyone says anything.

Boots first. Heavy, deliberate steps across the floor. When she steps fully into the room the difference between her and the rest of us is almost jarring. Everyone here arrived with folders and coffee. She looks like she walked straight out of an operational staging area.

Full tactical kit. Vest properly fitted with equipment placed exactly where it should be for fast access. Gloves still on. Combat pants tucked into boots. A helmet clipped to her belt at her hip. Her posture is straight, shoulders squared in a way that reads immediately as military. Not just military—combat trained.

    My brain starts cataloging automatically.

Movement efficient. No wasted motion. Eyes scanning the room in a single quick sweep. Situational awareness first, introductions second.

    Former military, almost certainly.

Morgan leans slightly back in his chair.

    “Well damn.”

Someone else mutters something under their breath, but I’m not really listening because the section chief is speaking again.

    “This is Special Agent Hale.”

    He pauses briefly.

“Newly appointed Unit Chief of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team.”

That produces a noticeable reaction around the table. HRT commander is not a position people reach casually. The path usually requires extensive tactical experience, federal training, and years of operational credibility.

She moves toward the table with complete confidence, stopping at the open space near the front. There’s nothing theatrical about it. She simply occupies the space like she expects everyone in the room to adapt to her presence.

    Which they do.

    Several agents straighten slightly.

    I realize I’m staring.

Not because she’s intimidating—although that’s clearly the reaction everyone else is having—but because my brain is busy running comparisons.

Marine posture. The way she holds her shoulders suggests long-term gear load. Balance slightly forward on the balls of her feet. Operational readiness even in a meeting room.

Special operations background would be the most likely explanation.

And then there’s another thought layered quietly beneath the analysis.

    She’s very pretty.

Not in a fragile or delicate way. The kind of attractiveness that comes from strength, from confidence, from someone who is clearly used to functioning in environments where hesitation isn’t tolerated.

    Morgan nudges my elbow.

    “You’re staring.”

    I blink once.

    “Oh.”

    I lower my voice slightly.

    “I’m analyzing.”

    Morgan snorts quietly.

    “Kid, that is not analyzing.”

The section chief gestures toward the team.

“BAU, Chief Hale will be coordinating tactical support for high-risk operations moving forward.”

Then he gestures in my direction.

“And this is Dr. Spencer Reid, our newest profiler.”

Her gaze shifts briefly toward me.

The look is quick but deliberate—evaluating, assessing.

I can practically see the same analytical process happening from the other side.

I become aware that I’m still smiling slightly.

    Not intentionally.

    Just… fascinated.

    Morgan sighs beside me.

    “…Oh no.”

    I keep my voice quiet.

    “She’s interesting.”

Morgan glances toward the front of the room again.

“Most of us are thinking terrifying.”

    I tilt my head slightly.

    “No.”

I pause, still watching the way she stands with that calm operational readiness.

    “She’s impressive.”
