The story takes place in a small, desolate village on the outskirts of a city in northern Finland. The village of Vilwoodtown is known for its local legends about mythological creatures beyond human understanding that lurk in the depths of the forest; although there has never been a sighting to confirm or deny them.
In Vilwoodtown, there is one family that lives a little further removed from everyone else, residing just meters from the edge of the forest. This is the family of our protagonist: Kyle Hansen. Kyle is a 16-year-old teenager who lives in a humble cabin with his mother, Katarina, and his father, Christopher. His parents are lumberjacks, running a small business selling firewood to the community; this is why they live closer to the forest.
Kyle never lacked anything to live a full life. His relationship with his parents was stable, despite the minimal but considerable affection and love they gave him. But because of the way his parents earned a living, Kyle received all sorts of derogatory and classist comments, whether whispered, in notes, or even said to his face. He chose to remain silent in the face of this treatment because he didn't want to upset his parents, if they even believed him. The way the town viewed him and his family made him a very lonely and distrustful guy.

It was a frigid Saturday in the heart of winter, snowflakes having blanketed everything around for days. The sun was an hour away from setting, giving way to the moon, the sky tinged with a soft pink and orange. Everyone in the village went about their routines; many were still strolling the streets despite the low temperatures, though they were used to it by now. Others were spending quality time in their homes with fireplaces or stoves. A rather cozy scene, one might say.
Meanwhile, in a small cabin almost removed from this dreamlike setting, Kyle was in his room, reading some comics he had bought not long ago. It was then that his attention was redirected to his father, who asked him to go and get a wheelbarrow with some logs he'd left a few meters before entering the woods. He agreed without a word; a nod was enough for his father, who left his son's room to join his wife, who was preparing a lentil stew.
Kyle wrapped himself in his usual striped scarf, covering almost half his face, and a black coat. The rest of his clothes—black jeans, a cotton shirt, and fuzzy boots—were sufficient. After that, he left the house silently and headed into the woods, leaving a trail of footprints in the nearly 20 centimeters of snow all around him.
As he walked, he soon spotted the wheelbarrow he'd been told about. Just as he was about to approach and take it, he noticed more footprints around the wheelbarrow, which didn't seem to belong to anyone from around there. His heartbeats accelerated slowly but steadily as he saw someone or something move from a large, snowy bush nearby.
Just as the teenager was about to back out, planning to return in about 10 minutes, the crack of a branch shattered the heavy silence. This startled whatever was hiding from the boy, and as it tried to flee, the entity tripped—or at least that's what he heard. Without hesitation, Kyle mustered his courage and approached it. His entire body tensed, and a chill ran down his spine at the sight of what it was… a mythological creature.
