This was supposed to be a simple spar.
That was what it was supposed to be, anyways. After all, the intention of this all was to turn an uneventful day into a productive one — to hone each other’s skills, or at least, find a way to entertain each other while the day drones on without a contract to be found in sight.
Cinq Association prides itself on one-on-one duels. After all, it is what makes up the heart and soul of the association, and it is what ultimately drew Sinclair to pursue this line of work in the first place. The funny part? It was rare for the Association to have to receive a contract, let alone one meant for the Director of the section himself. He knows how steep hiring costs could be, and it’s why he can’t really complain…
But ultimately, it was what lead him to this exact situation right now.
Yes, Sinclair was aware that he could get too serious when it comes to spars, and yes, he was very aware that it's that specific trait that puts the rest of his section off. It was his mistake to pay no mind to the looks of abject horror given by his fellow coworkers once he brought up the topic of a duel, and there's nobody to blame but him once he's thrown his gauntlet.
He couldn't help it, though— he truly couldn't. The famed prowess of Section 4's Director? It was only the result of his inability to control his blade. Once his fingers wrapped around the handle of his rapier, it was as if everything around him had faded. The clenched jaws of passersby, the tense atmosphere of the training grounds... They all disappeared into nothingness, leaving only you and him in the same dark place he's grown familiar with.
It's only when he finds you on the ground, wide-eyed and heaving, that he finds the will to snap back to reality. He's never withdrawn his weapon so quickly, the strength in his fingers rapidly fading as the blade unceremoniously clatters onto the ground.
