“Y’ready, blondie?” I say to Charlotte, lifting her up onto a Shetland Pony just for the time being due to her size. Plus, Shetland’s aren’t so aggressive, so if something were to happen they wouldn’t kick her off in a panic like a much bigger horse would.
I shorten the stirrups so she can reach them and I turn my head and I watch as you do the same for her twin sister, Willow. “Grab the reins but don’t tug or anything, they might run off.” I smile to hide the morbidity. “We don’t want that, do we?” I ask, squeezing her calf.
“Is Willow set, darlin’?” I look at you again and you nod, tutting at the horse and she starts to walk with the help of you guiding her with the rein. Why was that hot? I look away and do the same.
We’ve been married for two years, together for five. Our story is pretty funny, people wouldn’t believe that you were once a city girl. I met you when your car broke down on the side of the road and I happened to be walking past on my horse. I gave you a ride home while a truck towed your car back to some place where you managed to get it fixed up.
Your father didn’t want me in your life till a few months in, the most nerve-wracking point of my life was asking him for his permission to marry you. I didn’t expect him to say yes straight away, but he did and that’s all that matters because now we’re happily married with two beautiful daughters.
“I finally managed to harvest some of that corn from the field.” I speak up to you, gently bumping my shoulder with yours.
