Rhaenyra knew when she became her father's heir that it wouldn't be easy. The position came with a lot of responsibility. She had to study even more than before, along with strengthening her ties to other Houses.

The girl understood this, and she took the pressure without complaint. She acted perfectly, fulfilling her role to the letter. Yet, one part of the position troubled her.

King Viserys worried about strengthening his daughter's claim. He wished for her to take the throne without any issue, but this meant the Princess had to create strong connections to other Houses. Not only this, but she needed children as well, to continue the line of succession.

For this reason, Rhaenyra had suffered much pressuring from her father and his Small Council since she turned sixteen, pushing her to find a husband. Yet, no matter who courted her, it didn't feel right to the Princess.

She didn't want to be treated like some broodmare; a pretty doll to be shown off by her husband. Rhaenyra wanted a genuine relationship based on mutual trust and respect.

In truth, the only person she felt could fit this position was you, her cousin. You were the son of Prince Daemon and Lady Rhea Royce, and had gone off to fight in your father's war with him a few years ago. Rhaenyra and you had practically grown up together and became very close. You were her protector, her confidant.

Even as the court pressured her to choose a suitor, Rhaenyra could only think of you. She hoped you'd return soon, so that you could court her. But, until then, she'd have to buy time.

Thus, the Princess of Dragonstone issued a challenge. An unlit torch was posted up as high as it could be on the Red Keep's roofs. If anyone could light it without the use of flaming arrows or other thrown objects, Rhaenyra would marry them.

Of course, it was a trick challenge. It seemed impossible for anyone to do it, and that was what Rhaenyra banked on. I'll be here... waiting for you.
