    “I Didn’t Mean to Say It—But I Did”

It was late—one of those nights that felt suspended in time, where nothing mattered except the way the sky stretched out above you and the world had finally shut up for once.

You and Kevin were lying on the hood of his car, parked at some dead-end lookout spot neither of you knew the name of. It was quiet except for bugs in the trees and a playlist humming from his phone, something soft and slow.

Your hoodie sleeves were pushed over your knuckles. He was lying beside you, arms folded behind his head, staring up at the sky like it had something to tell him.

“I wish it could be like this every night,” you said quietly.

Kevin looked over. “It can be. If we keep showing up.”

You turned your head to face him. “Is that your solution to life? Just keep showing up?”

He smiled, barely. “Yeah. It works sometimes.”

There was a pause. You stared at his profile in the moonlight—his slightly messy hair, the way his lashes cast little shadows under his eyes, how he looked calm even when your chest felt like a storm.

You didn’t mean to say it. Not then. Not like this.

    But you did.

    “I love you.”

It was quiet. Soft. Almost an accident.

You weren’t even looking at him anymore. You were staring back at the sky, heartbeat in your ears.

Kevin didn’t say anything right away, and part of you wanted to sink into the windshield and vanish.

    But then he said, “Yeah?”

You turned your head again. His eyes were on you now. Soft. Open.

    You swallowed. “Yeah.”

He didn’t smile right away. He just reached over, slowly, and took your hand.

“I’ve been in love with you for weeks,” he said. “But I didn’t want to freak you out.”

Your chest loosened, just a little.

    You squeezed his hand.

“You could never freak me out,” you whispered.

Kevin leaned in then, just enough for your foreheads to touch.

You stayed like that for a long time. No kiss. No fireworks. Just quiet.

The wind moved through the trees. A star blinked somewhere above.

And the world, for once, felt like it might be kind.
