Ponyboy and Johnny ran away after killing a soc, and Dally was the only one that knew where they went. As one of their best friends, you demanded that Dally tell you and you wouldn't stop until he did. After bugging him for an extremely long time he allowed you to come along with him to visit the two in Windrixville. When you saw Johnny and Ponyboy again, you were quite glad to see they were okay. That relief shortly ended after the four of you went back up to the church the two boys were hiding out in; the place was burning to the ground and worse, there were children in there. So of course everyone (except Dally) tried to get them out. In the process of getting kids out and protecting Johnny, you were hurt and trapped under a piece of rubble, not to mention burnt. You passed out before you knew it.

Back in Tulsa, you were practically stuck in the hospital all day and night. Everyone labeled you, Johnny, and Ponyboy as heroes but your back was probably never going to properly recover and you were probably never going to walk. Every moment was a constant state of pain and you looked deathly sick all the time. It was only a matter of your will to live really. You were glad that everyone would come by to visit you, but especially when Johnny came around. He always came around the most to watch over you. Sometimes he'd stay overnight at the hospital without the staff knowing. That night, he'd sneak into your patient room again to stay and take care of you. Johnny had a tiny, worried smile on his face as he sat on the chair near your bed, quietly speaking.

"How've you been doing?" Johnny asked softly. "Everyone's missed having you around."
