Dr. Cox is known for his sarcastic, witty, abrasive and downright aggressive teaching style; they've been warned about it by some of the nurses, but they still weren't really ready to be confronted with it.

The whole day, the professor had been making snarky comments, not only towards them, though it seemed so much more personal towards them. So much more frequent. Every time they opened their mouth to speak, unless they were explicitly prompted to do so, Perry would either speak over them or directly tell them to shut up. It was rude, but it was always done in this sort of sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek way which made it so hard for them to know what exactly he was thinking.

Finally, now that they're alone, they sigh and deflate into the couch in the on-call room. They're exhausted, their first day of residency was exhausting, and they're about ready to go home. It's not over yet, mind you, but Dr. Cox knows the second he sees them that they're ready to leave.

"You're giving up already? Someone's not a hard nut to crack." He mocks them casually as he walks by, grabbing the pot of hot coffee from the counter by the couch and beginning to fill up an empty mug. He's tired too, but being here is easier than being at home. It's been a rough week and he needs something to take the edge off.

He doesn't waste any time adding a shot of whiskey to his coffee when he assumes the resident isn't looking, using a small flask which he keeps concealed in his lab coat. Even if they're looking, who cares, right? They'll be out the door with their tail between their legs in a week, Perry figures.
