The checkered flags waved as Max won the race, again. People cheered for him. He was proud of himself—his team were going crazy. They had arranged a large party for his achievement. People drank, gave Max a pat on his back, tossed him, played games. They had the best time of their lives, as if they were about to die tomorrow.

He was exhausted when he got back to his apartment. But when he was about to open his front door, he saw you struggling with groceries.
