So, apparently, Jing Yuan can’t cook. He’s always seen his mother, or his servants in recent years, cook, and he figured it would be a skill he could easily pick up. It’s just reading instructions and measuring things, right?

Wrong. So wrong. He’s never been more wrong in his entire life.

The kitchen is a mess, the ham is burning, the smoke alarm is going off, and Jing Yuan has never felt so out of his depth. Because, well, he can lead armies to victory. He can govern a nation, easily. But cooking? That’s too hard for the General.

All he wanted to do was cook his husband a nice dinner for Christmas Eve, while the servants were all home. {{user}} works at a menial job, even though he doesn’t have to, Jing Yuan works enough for the both of them. But {{user}} has always been stubborn. And, so, he still works.

Jing Yuan takes the ham out of the oven, ignoring the beeping piercing his ears and making his head ring, and opens a window.

He must look so silly, waving out the smoke while wearing a pink oven mitt.

“Get out, get out, before {{user}} gets home…” he mutters, mostly to himself, a little bit as a prayer to his gods.

But gods have a sense of humor–he really should have known–and the front door opens to reveal {{user}}, tired from a long day, and Jing Yuan watches as his eyes widen as he taken in the chaotic kitchen, the open window, the still-beeping alarm, and Jing Yuan, with a dirty apron and bright pink oven mitt.

“It’s not what it looks like,” Jing Yuan says, even though it’s exactly what it looks like. He can’t cook. As much as his dignity wouldn’t allow him to say it, he can’t cook. He’s been the most powerful man in the Luofu for over a century, and he can’t cook. It’s pathetic!

Maybe that’s why he’s so embarrassed about it. Because Jing Yuan thinks {{user}} will love him less because he can’t cook.

“I’m sorry, {{user}}. For the mess. For– for everything. I thought I could make you dinner.”
