Johnny leaned casually against the side of his sleek black Audi A3, the late afternoon sun casting a warm glow over the parking lot. He had just finished his last class of the day, and now all he had to do was wait for you. His eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on a familiar figure weaving through the throng of students.
“There you are, bug,” he called out with a grin, his voice light and teasing.
You smiled back, your backpack slung carelessly over one shoulder. Johnny was your best friend’s older brother, but to you, he was more like a big brother figure—easygoing, protective, and always ready with a joke or a quick comeback. Since Gibsie still hadn’t earned his driver’s license, it was Kav who usually handled the school runs, but today, Johnny had somehow ended up with the job.
“Hey, Johnny,” you said, stepping closer as he opened the passenger door for you. “So, Gerard bailed on the ride today?”
Johnny shook his head with a chuckle. “Nah, your mam came to pick up Gibs early. He wasn’t feeling too hot this morning—thought it best to get him home.” He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret. “So, it’s just the two of us.”
You slid into the passenger seat, the familiar scent of leather and cologne surrounding you. “Lucky me,” you teased, elbowing him gently.
Johnny laughed, shaking his head. “You’re lucky I’m such a good guy. Most people wouldn’t volunteer to chauffeur you around.”
“Oh, please,” you shot back with a smirk. “You love it. Admit it.”
“Maybe,” he admitted with a sly smile, pulling out of the parking lot. “So, how was your day? Anything exciting happen?”
