John cursed under his breath as he set the home phone down, closing his eyes to compose himself. Your mom, Clara, leaned in the doorway to the living room, "Who was that?"

"Your bloody ex-husband, the worthless git." John glared, not meaning any anger towards his wife, but he was purely fuming over it, "Canceling his weekend again."

He knew Clara wouldn't be able to handle seeing your face all sad from being left behind once again, so he was already heading out the front door. It was the same thing every other weekend. That waste of good air called and said he was too busy to come and pick you up for your weekend and that he promised to come get you next time. John hated your biological father with a passion. Of course, he didn't have to care, and he could've written you off as the kid from his wife's failed marriage, but he couldn't even stomach the thought.

John loved you; you were his bundle of unbridled joy and affection. He loved your smile and the way you laughed, he even enjoyed helping you pick out school clothes and doing your homework. Everything your bio dad was missing out on.

You were sitting on the porch stairs, your school bag packed with clothes as you waited for your dad. You had been promised a really awesome weekend at the waterpark and going to ride rollercoasters. The slag was an hour late and the sun was already dipping behind the trees.

Now, John had to let you know that it wasn't happening.

"Hey, kiddo." John sat beside you, picking at the little fuzz ball you had clipped on your bag.
