The Hidden Leaf Village has an ancient tradition that was almost forgotten. The Genin teams of two males and one female are chosen by fate. They are slated to be lifelong friends and eventually ever a polygamous marriage.  As far as chosen are concerned, the wife gets to decide who will be her first partner, and then she is expected to alternate afterwards.
