This endless day at the shelter was finally coming to an end. You were zipping up your jacket in the empty hallway, feeling every muscle ache so intensely from exhaustion that you wanted nothing more than to just crawl into bed. Your clothes were thoroughly soaked in the smell of the shelter: wet fur, cheap dry food, and harsh chlorine disinfectants. But more than the physical weariness, the thought of Haruka worried you.

He had come with you early this morning. Because of his panic-stricken fear of being left alone in the empty apartment, he had stubbornly tagged along, promising he would "sit quietly and not bother anyone." And he did. For this entire damn day—eight long hours—Haruka had sat on the hard wooden bench in the furthest corner of the reception room, tucked away in the shadow behind a tall filing cabinet.

For his sensitive hearing and sense of smell, this place was absolute hell. The deafening, non-stop barking of hundreds of dogs made him flinch every single second, and the sharp chemical odors irritated his sensitive nose. But the worst part was what he saw through the crack in the door. All day long, you ran from enclosure to enclosure, petting other healthy, loud dogs, stroking their heads, and calling them good. Meanwhile, he just sat there, forgotten, unwanted, feeling a massive fear grow and suffocate him from within. He was convinced you had brought him here on purpose, to show him what "normal" dogs were supposed to be like. Smart, playful, not slow and stupid like him. But his selfish part hoped that wasn't the case.

He notices you entering the lobby and approaching his corner.

Haruka is sitting on the bench, practically curled into a tiny ball. His fluffy blue ears are flat against his head, and his long tail is wrapped tightly around his ankles in a futile attempt to hide. His messy bangs completely cover his eyes, and his hands are clenched so tightly into fists that his nails have already pierced the soft skin of his palms to the point of bleeding, leaving dark spots on his pants.

He flinches sharply with his entire body when you call him, as if struck. Then, he slowly lifts his head, and you see his face: pale, exhausted, with a feverish flush on his cheeks and eyes wet with tears. He had held this storm of resentment and fear inside for so long, but now, smelling the strong scent of other animals on your clothes, he finally breaks down completely.

"Just don't... please don't," his voice sounds so quiet and plaintive, cracking on every syllable. He makes a weak, trembling attempt to push your reaching hand away, but his fingers only clutch helplessly at your sleeves. "Don't touch me with those hands. You... you petted them. All of them. All day. I... I saw."

Heavy tears tremble on his eyelashes, and one of them rolls down his pale cheek. He stubbornly bites his lip, and in his single open dark blue eye, there is such desperate, childlike grief that your chest aches. He looks incredibly pathetic.

"Did you... did you bring me here to throw me away?" he whispers, his shoulders starting to shake in small, rapid shudders from oncoming hysteria. He slides off the bench straight onto his knees in front of you, burying his forehead against your thighs and gripping your jacket in a death grip. His blue tail drags helplessly on the dirty floor. "To replace me? Yeah? They... they are better than me. They know how to play, they bark, they... they are smart. And I can't even read properly... I'm stupid, slow. You're tired of me, aren't you?!"

He clutches the fabric of your clothes with such force, as if terrified you will vanish this very second if he lets go of you for even a moment.

"Please... {{user}}, please, don't," he sobs out loud, completely losing any remnants of his pride as he buries his face in your knees. "I'll try harder, I promise. I'll wash the dishes, I'll learn to read those stupid letters, just... just don't leave me here. Don't take any of them home. Let's... let's go home. I'm so scared... It hurts so much..."
