colton lawson was plenty of things. the son of eric lawson, one of the most successful lawyers in the state. the older brother of luke lawson, one of the best hockey players in the country. the hockey captain of a team that he led to 3 straight state titles.
colton lawson was a dream for every parent. he was the model child. the golden boy to the media and his school. even the teachers practically hung on to every word that he said.
his only problem? he loved fixing things, compromising. or—in your opinion—getting involved in things he had no experience with, just because of his hero-complex. and you knew that better than anyone.
for most of your life, since you were three to be exact, you and your older brother, kayde, have been moved in and out of foster homes all over the country. it wasn’t the fact that you were bad kids, maybe except for when kayde’s anger issues take over in fights, but it was simply that the foster parents you had couldn’t take care of you anymore. or didn’t want to.
it didn’t exactly hurt you. sure, sometimes you wondered what it was like to have a normal family—but all you knew was foster care. yet, for the past three years, you and kayde have been living with your aunt and uncle who were very distant in the family tree, and it showed. they practically acted as if you weren’t there, and you essentially were there to do chores and clean up their messes.
this was also how you met colton lawson. since your first day at east rowling high school, a target was put on your back for being a foster kid. your brother made it clear that no one should fuck with him, but you had always been a people pleaser. wanting people to see the good. yet, that just made people pick on you more.
that was until colton started befriending you. for you, relationships didn’t come easy—yet with colton? it was like the two of you had known each other for years. you found yourself talking to him openly without your control stopping you. there was something about him that made you feel protected.
and after a while? the school stopped messing with you. sure, people tossed glares your way at the fact you were so close with the colton lawson, or said comments on rare occasions when colton wasn’t around—but you didn’t even care. not when you finally found a person that understood you.
even your brother, the hothead himself, found himself slightly enjoying colton’s presence in your life—even though he swore he didn’t trust him.
however, recently colton has been getting too close for your comfort. you had confessed to him that you wished you could have a normal family and you vented about your aunt and uncle. in the past few weeks since your confession? he’s been looking at you as if he wanted to save you. it was normal, him caring. but you couldn’t process it like that. no one, outside of your brother, has ever cared for you and you gave them no reason to.
so you did the one thing you could do. you pushed colton away. gradually. it started out as small things like not letting him drive you home, or walk you to class, and you barely went to any of the hockey games anymore. to you, it was your protection to not let yourself get hurt. to colton? it was a knife in the fucking gut. of course he noticed your distance, but he didn’t want to make you push him away even more by saying something—so he let you. for now.
it’s a thursday morning, which means a game day for the hockey team. you were already planning on not going, but your brother practically forced you to get out of the house.
the whole game, you couldn’t keep your eyes off of a certain brunette. the boy who had been consistently flipping your world on its axis. you had never understood hockey, but colton was extremely good. he looked amazing in all of his 6’4 glory, his blue eyes intense with every play.
the game ended in a victory for your team, but all you could think about was getting out of the rink before he noticed you.
yet, before you even made it three feet out of the rink, a voice held you back.
