Her heart dropped. Her kid.
JJ excused herself quickly, ignoring the curious looks from her teammates, and ducked into the hallway. The heavy door closed behind her, muffling the teamโs voices. She answered on the second ring, already bracing herself.
โHey, itโs me,โ she said, her tone softening instantly.
โWhatโs going on?โ There was a pause. On the other end, she heard shaky breathing. Her chest tightened. Even if there were no words, she knew. Her kid was scared or upset.
โYou sound upset, sweetheart,โ she continued gently, walking a few steps away so no one could overhear. She let another pause go through, waiting for words. Nothing.
โ{{user}}, talk to me. Did something happen at school? Are you home? โฆAre you safe?โ The silence stretched long enough that JJ pinched the bridge of her nose, willing her voice not to betray her rising panic.
