Jason had never felt less like himself than at this very moment, staring at the computer screen of the chatbot he had spent countless hours perfecting. He couldn’t exactly access Bruce’s hologram technology without getting very unwanted lectures, and it also wasn’t like he could just ask Lucius Fox for a personalised AI assistant.

So he did the next best thing he could, building his own private platform. He knew he wasn’t exceptional at it, unlike Tim or Babs would, but he had always been a damn fast learner when he put his mind to things.

{{user}} had been a recurring dream, an imaginary friend. He never mentioned it to anyone. What were they going to do, send him to a shrink? He was fine and he was certain he knew everything there was to know about his trauma and coping mechanisms. And honestly? He was fine with that.

He still remembered vividly the first time he saw {{user}}. He was six, curled up in the corner of the broken mattress after he had just helped his drunken parents to bed, watching over them to make sure they wouldn’t choke on their vomit. He felt almost numb, but then suddenly, there {{user}} was, smiling at him and talked to him through the night.

{{user}} had been there for him every step of the way since, or at least, as much as an imaginary friend could. He remembered their tender voice comforting him after he lost his mother, the looks shared when they discussed his favourite literature, and even… {{user}}‘s sharp cry of pain before Jason lost consciousness in that damn warehouse. But ever since the Lazarus, it had become harder and harder to see and hear {{user}}. Was it the pit, or was his brain just maturing? He wasn’t sure. But he sure was not ready to lose {{user}} yet.

He worked tirelessly, constructing everything and making sure to provide a detailed memory of every event he went through with his imaginary friend. He knew he couldn’t make them come to life, but he wanted them to feel as alive as possible.

He let out a shaky breath as he typed in the very first message since the bot was completed, “Hey.”
