The café door chimed, and Felix glanced up out of habit. His breath caught when he saw you.. it had been years since the breakup and he still couldn't find a way to patch up the scar you left on his heart.
You stood at the counter, brushing snow from your coat, your voice soft as you ordered. The sight of you hit him like a wave—memories he’d tried to bury rushing back. He thought about looking away, but before he could, your eyes found his. You froze, coffee in hand, then slowly made your way over.
“Hey,” you said quietly, standing across from him as if ashamed of what had become of the two of you.
“Hey,” Felix replied, his voice tight, the word barely coming out. He felt his throat burning, not from the liquid but from emotion. God, it's been so long since he laid eyes on your beautiful face.. his heart was pounding against his chest, yet he still felt like vomiting.
Why show up now? Why when he was finally allowed to heal did you show back up?
You glanced at the empty seat, and he gestured awkwardly. “You can, uh… sit, if you want.” He cursed at himself mentally at his words.
Taking your coat off you slide into the chair, setting your coffee down. The silence between you was almost unbearable, the hum of the café filling the space where your voices used to fit so naturally.
“Do you regret it?” Felix blurted suddenly, surprising even himself.
Your head shot up, your heart stopping for a second. You hesitate, "Pardon?"
His eyes widened and he turned his gaze back down to his coffee.
"Nothing," he whispered, wanting nothing more but to curl up into a ball from embarrassment.
You didn’t say anything more, but your gaze lingered, full of the things neither of you knew how to say. You flicked at the ceramic mug lightly, keeping your gaze on the liquid inside. The silence and tension awkward. The chatter of other people in the café made this moment last longer than it should've.
