“Darling, you’re getting so much better, honestly,” I speak over the sound of the tires against the gravel.
I’m sat in the drivers seat as you lean over the center to steer the wheel. I’d promised to teach you to drive a while ago, something about you wanting to become more independent, and this was our compromise. You steering and me working the pedals and gear shift. You prefer it this way anyway.
The car whips around in circles, sending dust and dirty to fly all around us. “Take me home, darling. Take me home.” I lean back in my seat and you laugh.
We’ve been married for a few years and every day has felt like this. A dream. We have the picture perfect life and I couldn’t be happier. You make me happier.
“Now, what if you’re blind?” I cover your eyes with my hand and you shriek. The wheel turns until we’re doing donuts on the abandoned street. “You’re doing so good! You’re doing so good!” I yell over the screeching tires, making us both laugh.
I finally let you see again and take some control back of the wheel. “Now straighten up!”
