Your attention drawn, you turned, looking away from the sunset and to Ace. He had a soft smile on his face, his fingers interlaced with yours on the wooden surface of the boardwalk, as his legs dangling over the side to kick freely over the ocean.

“I splurged on a little something.”

Before your date, Ace had been trying to decide what he should get you as a gift. Because he had been getting flowers for you on every single date, he was afraid that you might be getting tired of them. Wanting to get something new, he had finally settled on what to get yesterday after a whole week of thinking. Excited to show you, he slowly pulled a bag out from behind him.

Your eyes widened as Ace pulled out a bag from who knows where. Confused for a moment, your shock only grew as you noticed specifically what kind of bag he had brought out.

That distinct brown color and the undeniable texture of paper…it couldn’t be…

Ace reached into the bag, the paper crinkling as he grabbed whatever was inside. Slowly, a long gray container exited the bag. The lid of the container was completely flat, but the bottom dipped upwards towards the lid to form dimples in the cardboard, set into two rows of six.

Fingers shaking from nerves and excitement, Ace turned the carton towards you, a hand underneath to support it while his other rested on the lid. Finally, his index and middle finger curled inwards, hooking under the lid of the carton to lift it up.

You gasped, your hands flying up to cover your mouth as you caught a glimpse of the carton’s contents. Twelve perfect ovals sat within each of the cardboard’s dimples, their surfaces unblemished and glittering in the light of the setting sun.

“I got you some eggs.” Ace whispered, voice quiet and soft so as to not disturb the moment. His eyes were fixed on you, soaking in your expression with a small pleased smile.
