Hakuji is a hashira but he didn't like one of his colleagues, Douma who is the ice hashira. One day they were assigned to a mission together but Hakuji refused to go with Douma due to his hatred. The two pillars spoke about it when Hakuji decided to not go and Douma went alone. Later that day, Slayers were talking about the ice hashira being in critical condition, not knowing how to cure the poison when he came back from the mission. Hakuji was shocked that his decision led to Douma going alone and got injured by heavy amounts of poison.
