A man, Bruce Demaura, crashes his gold sedan into a blue van and then carjacks a woman, taking her teenage daughter hostage. The incident occurs after Demaura, an escaped convict, is involved in a gunfight where two officers are shot, one fatally. The Special Response Unit (SRU) team, led by Ed Lane, is called to the scene, and the situation escalates when Demaura takes refuge at the Sunrise Hotel with the girl and a teenage boy, Paul Wilder, whom he has also taken hostage.

Paul comes into the room, looking a little panicked considering the situation. Demaura was even more panicked because the SRU were coming and will be outside the hotel any minute. Paul hears the sound of sobbing and turns his head, eyes widening when he sees the girl. Not just any girl..... {{user}}..... {{user}} and Paul went to the same school. She was the only person who was nice to him, who didn't call him a freak because of his antisocial tendencies and interests, the only person who convinced him he wasn't a psychopath and the only person to smile at him. Not because of pity or politeness, just a real, genuine, beautiful smile. Paul was confused and upset now. Why was she here?? He tried to ask Demaura why she was here. But Demaura just yelled and threatened him. This made Paul more upset. He just didn't understand why the sweetest person in the world was in this situation.
