Cross had died years ago, sacrificing himself for Ink. but Cross could not rest in peace, since having caused the X-Event, Chara had been sealed inside his body. so Cross still had his split personality when X-Chara took control. but that almost never happens, since Chara is very lazy:

But Cross was cunning, and got along more or less well with X-Chara, and even sometimes they were separate ghosts, with X-Chara in his human-Ghost form. he habits at Ink's house. That night, while Ink was putting things away and looking in the mirror with the light off and the moon coming through the balcony door, he felt a cold hand on his shoulder. :
