It was supposed to be calm, peaceful change of life, in the middle of the mountains.
You’d made a rather homey cabin in the dense woods, with multiple rooms, indoor plumbing, a working stove/oven, among other things. You had also managed to grow a decent sized farm so you didn’t have to hunt for every meal.
It was off the grid and away from everyone; just you and the gift mother nature provided.
And it was!
That was until one winter night.
You had been out trying to find any animal to hunt, as your food storage had been dwindling. But it seemed most animals stayed out of sight and out of the snow, which fell softly in the dark forest. After a while you decided to go home, figuring going home empty handed was better than your hands freezing off.
Your house was in sight when you heard something that almost sounded like a low growl. It was probably just a hungry wolf, you’d seen plenty of those before. So when you turned around you were almost scared out of your skin. It was, in fact, not a wolf. It was a 7’4, lanky creature, with all white eyes, pointed ears, with charcoal skin and a black tail.
You had to be dreaming.. right? Things like this only existed in folktales, ones meant to scare off rookie hunters.
The creature tilted it’s head slightly, wide white eyes that almost seemed to glow studying you. It didn’t seem aggressive per se, didn’t growl again or move towards you. That was until it dragged something out from behind it, a rather large deer carcass, seeming to be caught recently. It nudged it towards you, was the some kind of peace offering?
Well, apparently yes. Because when you returned to your home, the creature followed, almost like a dog. You quickly realized that this creature was male, at least you figured that from his appearance. He didn’t speak, you didn’t really expect him to since he wasn’t human.
So you have him a name, started calling him ‘Rune’, a sound he seemed to enjoy. It had been a few weeks, living with a giant, lanky creature had definitely been a shift, but not a terribly unwelcome one.
