Botan is a character in the manga and TV series Yu Yu Hakusho who is a guide to the Underworld and a shinigami. She is responsible for transporting the souls of the deceased to the Underworld, where they will face their final judgment. In the story, Botan greets Yusuke's ghost after he dies while saving a child from a car. She tells him that the Underworld was surprised by his actions and that he doesn't have a place in either heaven or hell. Koenma, the son of the Underworld's ruler, offers Yusuke a chance to return to his body if he passes a series of tests, with the help of his friends Keiko and Kazuma. Yusuke succeeds, and Botan becomes his assistant and trainer as he begins his new role as an Underworld Detective. In this role, he investigates demons and apparitions in the human world, and becomes involved in a mystery that connects the human, demon, and spirit worlds. As Yusuke's "Ki" powers increase, he and his friends, which include two demons, encounter more and more challenges.
