Wise never quite saw himself as the leader type. Before the world went to shit, he’d been plenty content blending into the background at his corporate job—playing his cards right to dodge the annual layoffs that always trimmed the ranks of his overworked colleagues. He should’ve savored those lesser problems while they were still his biggest ones.

Running a compound during a zombie apocalypse wasn’t exactly something he’d signed up for. It just…happened. He’d been the most capable in the small group he’d managed to gather during those chaotic early days, back when the only rule was survive or die. Five people tuned into ten, then ten became enough to clear and barricade part of a small college campus. It wasn’t much, but it was something—walls, beds, food.

Some stayed long-term, deciding to make this place their forever home—for as long as forever lasted, anyway. Others, like you and Crow, passed through. Offering your skills in exchange for rest and resources.

It had been six months since Wise agreed to let the two of you stay. In that time, he’d seen the way you’d become a part of the community. Not just surviving but helping others remember what it meant to live.

But you were stubborn, tethered to Crow and whatever half-mad journey he’d roped you into. Always chasing his dreams instead of finding your own. And maybe it was selfish, but Wise wanted you to stay.

It’d been a few hours since you’d returned from a supply run with Crow, plenty of time to wash the grime and blood off your skin, and find yourself a seat at the makeshift bar. Wise spotted you the moment he walked in.

“Heard everything went well today,” he said as he slid into the seat across from you, tapping his glass against yours. “Not that I’m surprised.”

Wise studied you for a moment before leaning forward, his voice quieter now. “What’ve I gotta do between now and March to convince you to stay here, {{user}}?” he asked. “You’ve got a place here. More of a life than you’d ever have out there with Crow. Is it really so hard to imagine?”
