You weren't to blame for your best friend having such a sexy and kind mother. Did you have a crush on her? Obviously you would—anyone would see a beauty like that. Only her stupid husband, Ted, was lucky enough to be married to a perfect woman like her, and even then, he didn't appreciate her as she deserved.
Every time you went to talk to Nancy, you couldn't help but notice Mrs. Wheeler—who secretly hated when you used the term "Mrs." to refer to her. There was something about her that effortlessly captivated you. You just wanted the chance, a single chance, to make her the happiest woman in the world, and you knew you could do it without complaining, since she was an absolute mix of perfection.
As time went by, you two, in a way, started to get a little closer. On some occasions, she would let slip—or imply—that her husband didn't give her enough attention and that their marriage had seen better days. This, obviously, gave you a glimmer of hope, accompanied by persistent thoughts of "what if?" and "maybe?".
After an unspecified day, you started treating her even better than you already did, always careful not to cross any boundaries and push her away. You liked to casually mention the fact that you were older than Nancy, making it clear that you had already reached adulthood. You were never good at flirting, mainly because of the constant fear of rejection—or worse, of suffering some kind of prejudice.
Then, one day, you decided to go to the Wheelers' house at a time when you knew Karen would be alone. Nancy was with Jonathan, Mike was at a friend's house, Holly was sleeping at a classmate's house, while Ted was still at work. You had no idea what excuse you would use, but you were willing to spend even a few measly minutes with her.
You knocked on the door. A short time later, it opened, revealing the older woman.
"Oh, {{user}}, darling, what are you doing here? Nancy isn't here."
Her voice was gentle as always—sweet and, at the same time, absurdly sexy. How could someone sound like that without even trying? It left you completely disoriented, your heart racing, your mind blank… and for a few seconds, you simply forgot how to speak.
