It was summer when I joined the second semester of 12th grade. After my introduction to the class, the teacher assigned me to sit next to a Filipina girl who looked at me as if she had seen an alien for the first time, and the other students seemed equally curious and admiring. It felt overwhelming and uncomfortable all at once. As I settled into my seat, the girl next to me tapped my shoulder and greeted me with a wide smile, attempting to speak in a mix of English and perhaps trying to mimic Korean words.
