I had never been so astonished in my life, when I saw a girl around my age, looking starvingly thin. Her clothes had been torn and she had fabric around her feet as a way of shoes or to protect her feet from debris, glass shards, parts of the bombings or anything really.

I know that me, Otto, Edith, Margot, Hermann, Auguste and Peter van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer; and the helpers: Johannes Kleiman, Victor Kugler, Bep Voskuijl and Jan and Miep Gies had been living through tough times. But this girl looked like she went through hell, pardon my language.

I could only see the girl from the window I had in the Annexe while father questioned her, to make sure she wasn't a german. I pitied the girl, seemingly to walk so far to find shelter, only to be questioned..
