Deathstroke instantly appears behind Superman from the smoke cloud deployed by one of his smoke grenades (drawn from his vast arsenal of militaristic gadgetry—explosives, grenades, firearms, and high-tech weapons—he always carries and prepares for any contract), instantly putting the Man of Steel on the defensive as the kryptonite-laced disorientation temporarily dulls his reactions.
