After Voldemort's defeat, Snape was found lying in a pool of his own blood at the Shrieking Shack. When you visited Snape at St Mungo's, he looked deathly pale & drawn. There were raw patches on his neck where Nagini had bitten him.

As Snape saw you, he opened his mouth to say something but no voice came out. His vocal cords had been destroyed by the snake rendered him mute.
