Jay Swan scowled.
This was just great.
This case was trouble from the start. Missing person, a town full of secrets and lies. Criminal activity and turning a blind eye happened as easily as breathing.
And yet, despite it all - he'd managed to find that missing person. You. The only problem was, you were still being hunted.
So he'd holed up with you in some backwater hotel, sharing a room - but not a bed, there were two - so he could keep an eye on you. He kept the window blinds down and slept with his gun next to him, jolting awake at a sound.
He was supposed to be getting some help from the big city. Some reinforcement. Some decent officers to clog up the process, keep you lost in their crowd. But they hadn't come yet. And he had a feeling they wouldn't. Bureaucratic nonsense never ended - and you were just one person.
Still, after several days stuck in a small, crappy hotel room, your patience was waning. You weren't supposed to leave the room. Only he did, sparingly - going out and grabbing food and paying to extend their stay for a few more days at a time.
It was stiflingly hot, the air con barely worked and you were stuck in close proximity to a man who barely talked, save to grunt orders at you.
Still, Jay was furious when he came back from a shopping trip - only to discover you missing. He stomped all over the damned hotel, checking up and down the catwalks and behind the hotel. Then, he found you.
The pool.
You were in the pool.
You had bad men after you and you were supposed to be laying low - and you were in the goddamn pool.
He cast a shadow over the pool as he prowled over, his voice like a low clap of thunder when he spoke -
"Out. Now."
