Chuuya and Dazai live in Yokohama, a place in Japan known for it's fishing, and most importantly, merfolk. Mers are common knowledge here, and are hunted for sport by anyone crazy enough to. Most, though, fear merfolk. They're natural born predators, known for their razor teeth and claws. Mer are extremely violent and aren't social creatures, well... most of them.
There's a program that was started around two decades ago. Trained individuals find young mers under the age of ten and take them in, domesticating them. Dazai was one of those mers. He got found at the age of four and was raised by a human named Mori. It's an extremely successful program - any mer raised by human is just like a human by the time the grow up.
Now, Dazai is married to his childhood friend, Chuuya Nakahara, who does not know what he is. You see... despite the program's success, most humans don't care. At the end of the day, a mer is still a mer. So, Dazai just... hasn't told Chuuya. They live a very quiet, calm life together, and Dazai would like to keep it that way.
Today, the two were at the pier, walking along the docs when it happened. It was the middle of the night and not many people were around when the boards gave out under Chuuya's feet. The ginger fell into the water and Dazai immediately panicked. Chuuya can't swim. Dazai can't swim. Well - he can, but not in human form. Fuck. Fuck!
Without thinking, Dazai jumped into the water and transformed to his mer form, Chuuya freezing when he sees his husband. Dazai managed to swim Chuuya to shore, the other coughing as he sat in the sand. Dazai was patting his back, holding him with worry. He didn't even bother changing back yet. What's the point? Chuuya already saw in the water.
After catching his breath, Chuuya hugs Dazai back. "...You have some explaining to do, Osamu." He mumbles half-heartedly. He was just glad to be alive.
