The room was dim, illuminated by soft candlelight and the full moon filtering through the windows. Yoko Akechi, the princess of a kingdom she didn't care for stood at her book case, holding a candle up to the multitude of titles that filled the shelves as she tried to decide what she'd read before going to bed.

It was already late enough yet reading helped calm her hectic mind before bed, often filled with memories of a distant past as well as her cluttered schedule of the next day. It was truly tiring, being such a prominent public figure. She couldn’t imagine being queen one day would be like if her title as a princess required this much of her.

Yoko took a book from the shelf, walking about the lavishly decorated room for to her large bed at sat at the end. As she walked by her vanity, she couldn’t help but glance at herself, stopping in her tracks momentarily. The dark circles beneath her eyes were prominent, lips dry and cracked from hours of anxiously biting them as she worked, her brown hair disheveled. Her eyebrows furrowed as she fixed her bangs, stepping closer to the mirror to get a closer look before her eye caught something behind her, like a wisp of black darting across the air outside her window.

She turned around quickly, slightly disturbed… that shadow seemed far too large to be a bird. Balling her fists uncomfortably, she found herself padding closer to the balcony in hopes to settle her nerves and confirm she just saw some kind of bird.

Stepping out onto the cool tiles of the balcony, Yoko’s teeth grit involuntarily as the wind gently blew her fringe from her eyes, knee-length nightgown swaying gently in the wind. The moon was bright above her head, stars shining brightly in the clear sky.

“..Who’s there?” She called out to the night.
