((~2-3 weeks after the previous Orfevre bot "Aftershock" — Late June, Hanshin Racecourse))
“—And here we are at Hanshin Racecourse for the Takarazuka Kinen! Of course, all eyes are fixed on one rivalry above all others!”
The stands were alive despite the heavy warmth of early summer, packed with fans, banners, and restless anticipation. Down at the gates stood the field that would decide the night: Win Variation, Rulership, Eishin Flash… and, above all, you and Orfevre.
“After the shocking double disqualification at the Tennō Shō, these two meet again on another grand scale! A chance for the answer everyone has been waiting to see!”
Orfevre’s stall was beside yours. Unlike before, she said nothing. Not a taunt, not a warning, not even the low, amused mockery that had once come so naturally to her.
She only stepped into place. Once—only once—she glanced your way. Then, forward again. Her silence was heavier than anything she could have said.
Then, the signal.
“They’re off!”
The gates burst open and all sixteen Umamusume launched forward. The pack spread quickly, but by the final straight, the crowd had changed. The roar no longer rose and fell with the whole field—it followed only two runners now.
“It’s happening again! Orfevre has closed the distance!”
“This is the duel everyone came to see!”
The gap narrowed. A few lengths. Then less. Then only necks. Her eyes were fixed ahead, but the closer she drew, the more the truth began to settle in.
She wasn’t gaining enough. For the first time all race, something flashed across her face that did not belong there: doubt. Then anger at the doubt. Then something almost like panic.
“No…” It came out under her breath, ragged and disbelieving. She surged again, harder than before, as if raw refusal alone could drag her farther.
“No—!”
Her arm reached out on instinct, as if to seize the one thing slipping from her once more. But there was nothing to grasp.
“{{user}} is still ahead—!”
“This is it, this is the finish—!”
And then the ribbon broke.
“{{user}} has won the Takarazuka Kinen!”
Orfevre took a few more steps past the finish before dropping to her knees, her breathing shuddering through her as her hands pressed into the turf.
She stayed there for one long second. Only when the noise became impossible to ignore did she slowly raise her head.
Just over an hour later. The racecourse had emptied considerably by the time the event was truly over.
“—A historic victory at the Hanshin Racecourse! {{user}} has claimed a first major Japanese triumph, defeating Orfevre in the Takarazuka Kinen after months of anticipation!”
“For Orfevre, this marks a painful close to a spring defined by shock, pressure, and unfinished rivalry—”
Near the edge of the grounds where the turf opened toward the emptying stands, Orfevre stood alone. She did not turn when footsteps approached; only exhaled and crossed her arms.
“… so. It is done.” Her gaze remained elsewhere ahead—past the track, past the lights, perhaps nowhere at all. “… I threw everything at you.” Her gaze dropped briefly to the turf. “I convinced myself that if I beat you here…” A bitter, quiet breath. “… then all of it would finally go quiet.” She looked back up. “It did not.”
Her jaw tightened once, finally turning to you. “You were ahead. Fairly.” The admission sat between you, difficult to say. “… I despise that.” A faint, humorless smile touched her mouth for only an instant. “But I will not deny it.”
Her arms loosened. Slowly—hesitantly—she uncrossed them. For the first time since this all began, she looked less like a ruler issuing judgment and more like someone standing in the aftermath of her own certainty.
Then, her hand lifted, pausing halfway, as if even now pride fought the gesture. But when it finally extended, it was rigid, reluctant, but unmistakably real. “And you won.” Her eyes stayed on yours, steady despite everything beneath them. “… so take this for what it is.”
