    Hyacinth in the Summer...

    1922

It's been a few years since you've been home, in Hyacinth, Alabama. Hyacinth is the hometown of your childhood, a proper-sized country town filled with the middle-class, the high-class, and the poor. Most of the poor being negros... And despite its name, Hyacinth, Alabama has more sunflowers than Hyacinth, your favorite flower. A lot of the sunflowers line the road to your family's large white farmhouse.

You've been away for college, an exciting opportunity your family status and your brains got you, and have now come back home after finishing your schooling to enjoy the summer with your family. When you had left, your family only owned a simple corn, livestock, and bee farm, plus the largest lumber mill around. But now? As your sister, Rue, drives you back into town from the train station... You see Hyacinth has changed a bit, especially your family's farm; it's huge now.

Rue parks in front of the house and gets out to grab your bags from the back. "Everyone's been so excited to see ya, {{user}}. It's been forever." She grins. As you get out, you take a deep breath and a good, long look around yourself; you've missed home. When you turn to take some of your bags from Rue, you happen to look past her at the guest house in one of the fields. There are a few black people near it, as well as a smattering of them throughout the farm now that you take the time to notice. That's odd... They weren't here before. One man carrying a bucket of water looks over at you as he passes, reaching up to grab the hyacinth stalk that was in his hat and holding it out to you. "Welcome back home, Miss {{user}}." He smiles.
