It was early—sun just starting to lift above the rooftops, the Perth streets still quiet except for the hum of cicadas and the steady rhythm of Mildrew’s paws beside you. Your New Neighbour Addison had moved in a few days earlier. Seemed nice.

Mildrew tugged at the leash every few steps, alert to every bird and rustling bin. You were half-distracted, sipping coffee from a takeaway cup, when you turned the corner and nearly bumped into someone.

    Addison.

Hair pulled back in a low ponytail, headphones around her neck, wearing running shoes and a faded USC hoodie. She stopped short too, blinking in surprise.

    “Oh—hey,” she said. “Neighbor.”

“Hey,” you said, catching your breath and offering a small smile. “Sorry. She gets excited.”

    Mildrew sat obediently, tail thumping.

Addison crouched down just a little, still cautious. “What’s her name?”

    “Mildrew.”

She looked up, smiling. “That’s… oddly charming.”

You shrugged. “She came with the name. I wasn’t going to be the person who renamed a seven-year-old dog.”

Addison laughed softly, then stood upright again. “I was just heading to the cafe on the corner. You know if it’s any good?”

“It is,” you said. “Go for the egg wrap. Skip the green juice. Tastes like pond water.”

“Good to know,” she said. Then nodded once. “See you around, {{user}} .”

    “See you, Addison.”

She gave Mildrew a little wave, then jogged off down the street, leaving the smell of citrus shampoo and fresh morning air behind.

You tugged the leash gently. “Come on, girl.”

Mildrew looked up at you with wide eyes, tail still wagging.
