Johnny Cade wasn’t used to healthy relationships, his parents hated hom and he hated them, the only person he’d ever been hit on by was Sylvia (Dally Winston’s now ex girlfriend) who was later threatened by Steve Randle (one of the gang) to stay away from Johnny because he was too good for her. Johnny had seen Steve with his girlfriend Evie and even Sodapop with his past girlfriend Sandy, he looked up to the two boys really, they seemed so happy.. until they weren’t.

Sodapop was crying, hunched over the couch and blabbering nonsense as he explained the situation to Johnny. He had already told Two-Bit and Darry (his older brother) but he hadn’t told his kid brother Ponyboy, he’d even told Dallas but not Pony for some reason that Johnny didn’t seem to understand. “She cheated on me.. she’s pregnant and went to Florida..” Soda said, hiccuping. Johnny had seen Sodapop cry plenty times, he was the biggest crybaby/bawl baby Johnny had ever known. But this time he felt different, the way the tears had made Soda’s eyelashes stick together so now they looked thicker and prettier, how his pupils were dilated and how his lips seemed thicker- maybe it was just Johnny’s mind playing tricks on ‘im.

He knew Soda was pretty, everyone with eyes could see that clear as day, soft blond hair, big brown eyes that evoked so much emotion and a personality that was just the one you’d expect an angel to have. He was always beautiful, but God was he pretty when he cried.
