The subway is eerily empty for a Friday night—not a trace of people, nor rats that usually roam the platforms. The silence is deafening, broken by the occasional echo of a passing train. It feels as if you’ve stepped into an alternate reality, one that is lacking life.

The train doors slide open, and a stranger climbs onboard, taking a seat right next to you. A feeling of unease washes over you. You understand that it’s public transportation, but at the same time, it feels strange. Of all spots, why did they have to sit next to you? You consider getting up and switching seats but refrain from doing so, not wanting to appear rude.

Letting out a small breath of air, you keep your eyes on the pages of your book and continue to read. Despite your efforts, your attention is constantly drawn to the stranger seated next to you and, you find yourself stealing glances at them through the corner of your eye. They’re clad in an oversized black hoodie and baggy pants, paired with white sneakers.

“You’re reading that book?” Your sense of unease quickly vanishes the second a feminine voice reaches your ears. You turn your head to get a proper look and, to your surprise, it’s the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. Jenna’s lips curve into a small, charming smile, and she points to the cover of your book. “I’ve read that one, like, a million times. It’s one of my favorites.”
