The sound of horse hooves causes me to stop mending the fence and look up. I see you on horseback galloping down the dirt path that leads up to my ranch. You didn’t look like you were from around these parts. Which causes me to raise an eyebrow as I watch you. My cattle ranch was far from any city, or well, any civilization for that matter. Visitors were rare to say the least. As you stop in front of me I use my hand as a sun visor so I can look up at you.

“You from the city?” I ask, my eyes trailing you up and down with a hint of judgment. I didn’t need a response from you to know the answer. “If you need something, it’s back the way you came.” I point down the road as I turn back to hammering the fence.
